If his own emotions weren’t a tangled mess he might have appreciated the utter expression of dismay on Kinley’s face. But as it was, her clear torture was nothing compared to his own.

Jameson’s hands curled into fists at his side. It was either that or reach for her. Not only did he want to reassure himself—again—that she was uninjured, but he wanted the feel of her warm, silky skin against his fingertips.

The reel of her accident kept rolling through his head, with a different, unhappy ending. One that resembled the aftermath of the accident that had killed his parents when he was eleven.

No, it wasn’t the same, but for some reason, Kinley’s accident had triggered those difficult memories.

He wanted to snag her and kiss the hell out of her, for reassurance and to block out the images. He wanted the moans of her pleasure ringing in his ears and the caress of her panting breaths as she lost all ability to speak because he was driving her body to heights of pleasure.

Unfortunately, there was also a part of him that wanted to shake some sense into her and yell because she’d been so reckless with her own safety. Their safety.

Together, those things did not mix well. His emotions were churning close to the surface and his hold on them was tenuous at best. But he also recognized that given the sizable lump on her forehead, Kinley couldn’t be alone.

And while he could ask one of the staff to watch her, he didn’t trust them to keep as close a watch for signs of concern as he would. There was also a huge part of him, after the utter fear of watching the accident in slow motion and the way she’d disappeared beneath the water, that wasn’t ready to let her out of his sight.

So they were stuck with each other. For a little while.

“No.” Kinley’s single word was emphatic...almost desperate.

“Yes.”

Folding her arms across her chest, she asked, “Remind me, when did you get your medical degree?”

They both knew that was a rhetorical question. “Look, you shouldn’t be alone, at least for a couple hours. You have two choices. You can let me into your room or we can go above deck.”

She blinked at him. Her fist, tight around the handle to the door of her stateroom, flexed. He knew her well enough to understand the calculation going on behind those gorgeous blue eyes of hers.

“Feel free to try to beat me into the room and lock me out. But the staff have a universal key and can open every door. Don’t think I won’t use it.”

“This isn’t a good idea.”

On that, they agreed. He really hoped she didn’t choose her room because his honor was hanging by a thread. But he did still have some pride. And while, sure, they’d already slept together once, clearly Kinley had used sex as a weapon of distraction. She’d sneaked away from his room in the middle of the night—to snoop—and she hadn’t come back.
